The Prompt
Gerald Campano's teacher research conveys messages of hope, challenge, and social critique, merging intellectual, theoretical debates in the field with the lived experiential knowledge he produced collaboratively with students in his own classroom. Sonia Nieto says in the foreward (p.xii) that the book urges teachers to be "skeptical of the conventional wisdom...." Take up one or two issues in which he reflects upon or challenges the "conventional wisdom" associated with mainstream education. Explain your personal connection to the issue, his perspective and competing perspectives on the issue(s), and explain where you stand and why. If you aren't sure of your own position, it is okay to say that and/or raise questions. You may also want to explore connections or conflicts with writers we've read so far, as those writers are either part of the "conventional wisdom" or part of the critique. A la Campano, if you have experiences that inform your perspectives, please share them and tell us what lessons you learned. It is a fitting response to this book! Your stories become part of the knowledge that we, together, produce. So what matters to you?
