Tuesday 1001 - checked homework, gave syllabus, gave quiz. Students dismissed at 11:15 to check out website and do online homework.
Two students were cheating and had no materials or homework prepared. They would not leave class after being asked politely (no response except- sorry), nor after being told firmly (no response except stone silence), and still wouldn't when I demanded that they leave (still would not leave, body language dismissive of me crossed arms, heads down, leaning away from my presence- as if they could wait me out and I would forgot about them). Called our department's office manager. While I was on the phone with him, the students left.
Wednesday 1018 - attendance was taken. Many students were missing. Prizes (Angel in Us mug, 2 Gwangju Blog water bottles, and 6 GIC Day phone thingees) were awarded to 9 students for their online homework.
New homework assignments were reviewed. Students are expected to complete every page of Unit 1 and 2 in the textbook. I reminded them to study with a partner, use the answer key to support - not supplant - their learning, and use the CD ROM on their MP3 player or phone for more listening practice. The message "practice English everyday" is given again - emphasizing the online homework. I pointed out that the listening homework is actually the most difficult of the online work. Hobby English, games, Gwangju and Gwangjudae homework is more fun.
Entrance exams were conducted using materials from the textbook. Listening, reading, writing, speaking, grammar and vocabulary were all assessed. Speaking assesssment scores were very low. Students do not produce at all (don't understand the questions) or answer with one word/short answer. Quality information was gathered about hobbies and future goals to help create materials for future classes based around a relevent lexicon that they will easily be able to add to their life experience.
